How to Calculate Steam Generation in Boiler?

You are currently viewing How to Calculate Steam Generation in Boiler?

The main function of the boiler is to generate steam. This steam is used in many industries such as food processing, textile, power plant and pharma. But often the question arises “how to calculate steam generation in a boiler” i.e. how to calculate how much steam will be generated from the boiler? Let’s understand it in simple language.

What is Steam Generation in Boiler?

The boiler heats water and converts it into steam. The capacity and efficiency of the boiler are very important in this process. Steam generation means – how many kg of steam will be generated from how many kg of water and how fast it will be generated.

How to calculate Steam Generation?

When we talk about how to calculate steam generation in boiler, we have to keep some factors in mind:

  • Boiler Capacity (kilo per hour or ton per hour)
  • The capacity of the boiler tells how much steam it can generate in an hour.

Example: 1 TPH (Ton per Hour) boiler = 1000 kg steam per hour.

  • Heat Input (how much heat is given) – It is important to see how much heat energy is being obtained from the fuel given in the boiler.
  • Enthalpy of Steam – How much energy is required to make steam is known from enthalpy.
  • Efficiency of Boiler – The boiler is not 100% efficient. Its efficiency ranges from 70% to 90%.

Steam generation is calculated keeping this efficiency in mind.

Simple Formula:

  • Steam Generation (kg/hr) = (Heat Input × Boiler Efficiency) ÷ Enthalpy of Steam
  • Suppose the boiler has 500,000 Kcal/hr heat input and efficiency is 80%.
  • Enthalpy of steam (saturated) = about 650 Kcal/kg.

So,

  • Steam Generation = (500,000 × 0.8) ÷ 650
  • = 400,000 ÷ 650
  • = approx 615 kg/hr steam

Why is this calculation important?

  • To choose the right boiler
  • To estimate fuel consumption
  • To increase boiler efficiency
  • For industry production planning
